Restoring a Historic Treasure: The Work at Fort Paull Battery Heritage Site

Nestled on the banks of the Humber estuary, Fort Paull Battery Heritage Site is one of the most important historical landmarks in the Hull area. Originally built in the 16th century, the site has a storied past, having been used for the defence of the realm through many of Britain's military engagements, right up to World War II. After its closure in 2020, this important site is now being revitalised and reimagined to once again welcome the public.

Reviving Fort Paull

Since 2023, a dedicated team of volunteers and local businesses, including my company Hedon Exterior Cleaning, have been working to bring this historic site back to life. The goal is to preserve its legacy while transforming it into a community hub for events, educational programs, and tourism. Our collective efforts aim to restore the fort's structural integrity, improve the visitor experience, and ensure the site’s historical significance is celebrated.

Collaborative Restoration Efforts

At Hedon Exterior Cleaning, we’ve had the privilege of being a key part of the restoration process. Our team has contributed by ensuring the site's exterior areas, including pathways, stonework, and outdoor features, are clean and preserved. This is no small feat, as much of the site had been left exposed to the elements during its closure. By employing advanced cleaning techniques, such as high-powered vacuum systems for gutter clearing and pressure washing for algae and dirt removal, we’ve been able to restore many exterior surfaces to their former glory.

The ongoing collaboration with the site has also seen us playing a role in maintaining the site’s overall appearance for events like the End of Season American Rod & Custom Car Show, which attracted significant local attention this past September. Our work also supports the broader mission of maintaining the fort as a venue for future events, tourism, and educational visits.

Community-Focused Initiatives

The project is about more than just restoration—it’s about re-establishing Fort Paull as a focal point for the community. That’s why we’ve been raising awareness through promotions and special offers, such as a £5 donation for every domestic gutter clean and £10 for commercial gutters, to help fund the costs of further restoration work. Additionally, we've contributed to painting projects, ensuring that both the exterior and interior spaces reflect the historical importance of the site.

As we continue to move forward, Fort Paull’s future looks bright. With each phase of restoration, we are not just preserving bricks and mortar but the stories of the past for future generations to appreciate.
