Decking Refinishing: A Step-by-Step Guide

Refinishing a wood deck not only enhances its appearance but also extends its lifespan. Given the high cost of building a deck, proper maintenance is essential to protect your investment. With the right approach, you can complete a decking restoration project in a weekend or two, restoring its beauty and durability.

Choosing Decking Stains and Sealers

Most deck treatment products are designed as one-step applications that both stain and protect the wood. Understanding the different options available will help you choose the best product for your deck.

Types of Stains and Sealers

  • Semi-transparent stains: These allow the wood grain to remain visible while adding colour and protection.
  • Opaque stains: Also known as solid stains, these cover the wood grain entirely, providing a painted look with enhanced protection.
  • Clear sealers: These penetrate and seal the wood without altering its colour. However, they provide less UV protection compared to pigmented stains.

Water-Based vs. Oil-Based Stains

  • Water-based stains: Easy to apply, with low odour and simple soap-and-water cleanup. However, they tend to wear out faster.
  • Oil-based stains: These penetrate deeper into the wood, offering long-lasting protection but requiring more effort to apply and clean up.

Application Methods: Pads vs. Brushes

For the best results, use a paint pad applicator to stain/seal the main deck surface. Paintbrushes are necessary for detail work, such as handrails and corners.

  • Use natural bristle brushes for oil-based stains.
  • Use synthetic bristle brushes for water-based stains.

Safety Considerations

Deck stains and sealers contain chemicals that can be toxic and flammable. Take proper safety precautions:

  • Use an approved respirator when applying the stain.
  • Keep the area clear of open flames and heat sources.
  • Wear long sleeves, waterproof gloves, and eye protection.
  • Dispose of oily rags properly to prevent fire hazards.

Materials & Tools Needed

Equipment

  • Pressure washer
  • Garden hose and sprayer (optional)
  • Random orbital sander
  • Shop vacuum
  • Paint pad applicator
  • Paintbrushes

Materials

  • Decking cleaner/brightener
  • 60- to 80-grit sandpaper
  • 80- to 100-grit sandpaper
  • Decking stain
  • Clean rags

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Inspect and Repair the Deck

Carefully inspect the deck for loose boards, rot, or severe splitting. Replace damaged planks entirely rather than using wood filler, which may not withstand outdoor conditions.

2. Clean the Deck

Pressure wash to remove dirt, grime, and old finishes. If using a garden hose, apply a deck cleaner/brightener and scrub thoroughly.

Water Pressure Recommendations:

  • Softwoods (e.g., cedar, pine): 500-600 PSI
  • Hardwoods (e.g., walnut, kempas): 1200-1500 PSI

Caution: Excessive pressure can damage the wood, leaving it rough or splintered.

3. Let the Deck Dry

Allow the deck to dry completely for at least 48 hours before proceeding. Moisture in the wood can prevent proper stain absorption.

4. Sand the Deck

Use a random orbital sander to smooth rough areas:

  • Main deck boards: 60-80 grit sandpaper
  • Handrails and trim: 80-100 grit sandpaper

Vacuum thoroughly to remove all dust.

5. Apply the Stain

Start with handrails and work downward. Use a brush for detail work and a paint pad applicator for large areas. Apply the stain generously, let it absorb, and then wipe off excess to avoid pooling.

6. Apply a Clear Sealer (If needed)

If your stain does not contain a sealer, apply a clear protective coat to extend durability.

When to Call a Professional

While DIY deck refinishing can be rewarding, some situations call for professional expertise:

  • Severe wood damage: If your deck has extensive rot, warping, or structural concerns, professional restoration may be needed.
  • Deep stains and discoloration: Some stains, such as mould or mildew, may require professional-grade cleaning and treatment.
  • Large or multi-level decks: Bigger projects can be time-consuming and require specialised equipment.
  • Time constraints: If you don’t have the time or tools to complete the job properly, hiring a professional ensures high-quality results.
