Prior to embarking on any decking restoration project, it is imperative to commence with a thorough cleaning process.
There are two primary approaches to achieve this:

Decking Cleaning Chemicals:
Soft washing with specialised decking cleaning chemical formula offers a swift and efficient solution, minimising manual effort. However, it is crucial to be mindful of potential harm to plants. Shield them by employing protective plastic coverings before applying the decking cleaning solution.
Procedure:
- Clear the deck of all furniture and use a stiff wire brush to eliminate loose debris, leaves, and dirt.
- Safeguard the surrounding area, including plants and grass, to prevent any adverse effects from the cleaning solution.
- Apply the decking cleaner directly to the deck surface, ensuring thorough scrubbing. If mould is present, a combination of soft washing with a decking cleaner and biocide can address both cleaning and mould removal simultaneously.
- Allow 15-20 minutes for the cleaning solution to take effect. For optimal results, use a pressure washer to rinse off the solution. In the absence of a pressure washer, persistent scrubbing with subsequent rinsing using a hose is an alternative.
Pressure Washing:
For those averse to using chemicals, pressure washing combined with a stiff wire brush and manual effort can effectively eliminate accumulated dirt. However, exercise caution with this method if mould or algae is present, as it may exacerbate the issue. Mold treatment and removal are imperative before proceeding with pressure washing.
Procedure:
- Begin by sweeping the deck and protecting the surrounding area to prevent damage.
- Test the pressure washer on a concealed area to ensure it does not harm the decking. Opt for a wide nozzle to evenly distribute water pressure.
- Maintain the pressure washer approximately half a meter above the deck, starting at a distance, and gradually move closer (but no closer than 15-30cm) to avoid surface damage.
- Move the nozzle in sweeping motions, following the wood grain, and ensure continuous back-and-forth motion to mitigate pressure impact.
- Stubborn sections may require additional scrubbing with a wire brush.
Important Note:
If mould is present on the deck, it is imperative to address and remove it before employing a pressure washer. Pressure washing without prior mould treatment poses the risk of spreading spores and exacerbating the problem. Always prioritise mould treatment as the initial step in the cleaning process.

What is best? Decking Oil or Decking Stain?
Choosing between decking oil and stain depends on your preferences and the characteristics of your deck. Here's a detailed comparison to help you make an informed decision:
Decking Oil:
Decking oils, available in natural colours or clear finishes, enhance the wood's natural appearance. They deeply penetrate the wood, providing protection from within and preventing issues like cracking, splitting, or warping.
Pros of Decking Oil:
- Enhances the natural look of wood.
- Deep penetration protects from within.
- Resistant to dirt and water, requiring minimal upkeep.
- Durable and less slippery due to deep penetration.
- Protects against rain and sunlight.
Cons of Decking Oil:
- Cannot be stained or painted over; stripping is required for a change.
- Not suitable for certain hardwoods like teak.
Decking Stains:
Decking stains, like varnish, are available in various colours and act as a protective sealant on the wood surface, preventing weather damage and rot.
Pros of Decking Stains:
- Available in a variety of colours.
- Creates a tough protective layer against foot traffic.
- Provides protection against weather, rot, and greying.
Cons of Decking Stains:
- Can become slippery when wet.
- More prone to peeling and flaking if not properly maintained.
- Pigmentation can cover up the natural grain of the wood.

Staining Your Decking:
Preparation:
- Clean the deck thoroughly before applying the stain.
- Strip off the previous coat for a fresh application.
Application:
- Choose a paintbrush for most stains or an application pad for larger decks.
- Apply stain along the grain, preventing overlap marks.
- Paint three to four boards at a time.
Second Coat:
- Wait four hours for the first coat to dry.
- Apply the second coat using the same method.
Maintenance:
- Keep the deck clean for long-lasting results.

Oiling Your Decking:
Preparation:
- Clean and strip old oil before applying a fresh layer.
Application:
- Use a paintbrush or applicator pad.
- Apply a generous amount of oil along the grain.
- Focus on up to four boards at a time.
Second Coat:
- Wait four hours for the first coat to dry.
- Apply the second coat following the same steps.
Maintenance:
- Regularly clear dirt and debris for a lasting, natural look.
Consider your deck's size, wood type, and your preference for a natural or coloured finish when deciding between decking oil and stain.
